This post was sponsored by the lovely people over at Fairlife, but as usual, all opinions and stories are my own.
Would you believe me if I told you I’ve never tried frozen banana soft serve? I’ve heard about it for years and it’s always been one of those things that I told myself I’d try one day.
I do that a lot. Push off doing things that I want to do. For no reason, really. Maybe it’s procrastination. Maybe laziness. Maybe fear.
No, I was not scared of trying out frozen banana soft serve. Maybe afraid it wouldn’t be good. Or maybe afraid that even if I did come up with a tasty recipe, it would just get lost on the interwebs with all the other ones.
Something I realized once I started this blog was that I’m not the only one with clever healthy ideas for treats. I know it sounds arrogant, but I really did used to believe I had an original outlook on food and nutrition.
Story Time
I grew up in Nebraska where people at work called me a “health nut” because I ate broccoli and looked at me sideways when I said the cookies I brought in had whole wheat flour. One of my favorite anticdotes I share that shows just how different I feel when I go back home takes place when we visited Dave’s family “at the farm” as we call it. Yes, there are actually farms there, but we pretty much call the cluster of small towns where half of his extended family lives “the farm.”
Small town, Nebraska.
Corn and cows.
So peaceful and slow.
I would say simple, but that sounds insulting. I used to think it was just simpler, but folks there just focus on different things. Like corn and cows. And family and people. It’s just different and I’ll admit, I love it.
I was chatting with Dave’s aunt during one visit and I could tell she was struggling to find a subject to talk about. “Dave says you eat that special bread, right?”
I wracked my brain.
Special bread?
I eat lots of kinds of bread and I hadn’t even tried gluten free at the time so I couldn’t figure out what she meant. She said it in a way that made it seem she thought I was allergic to regular bread or I had some sort of medical condition that forced me to eat “special bread.”
I was clearly at a loss, so Dave volunteered, “whole wheat bread?”
Yep. The special bread I eat is whole wheat bread. Me and my whole grain tendencies are thought of as being weird back home. See why I started a blog thinking I had original or unique ideas?
I’m coming to terms (now that I’ve been immersed in blog world and life outside of Nebraska) with the fact that many of my ideas have been done before.
Double Chocolate Frozen Banana Soft Serve
Frozen banana soft serve has been done before. It’s okay.
I’m here on this blog to share with you me through my semi-healthy life. I don’t have to come up with revolutionary ideas, but hopefully my words, photos and food will inspire you to find your own semi-healthy balance.
Have icecream with sprinkles and chocolate. Just maybe add some fantastically healthy and delicious Fairlife milk and frozen bananas to the mix. And make sure those frozen bananas were as ripe and sweet as possible when you threw them in the freezer for the best results. If you’re not familiar with Fairlife, check out my review post to see why I am such a fan (it involves happy cows).
Semi-Healthy Life
Have your chili dogs and bang bang shrimp. Just drink plenty of water, eat a salad, and maybe do a mud run that weekend.
It’s not about getting extreme or making sure all of your calories in and out cancel. It’s about finding your happy balance. Eating what you love in fulfilling (not over-filling) portions and exercising in a way that makes you happy. Is that revolutionary? Maybe not. But in a world of strict dieting, cutting carbs, extreme fitness routines and restriction to fit into that bikini, I’m hoping it’s a refreshing point of view.
I know that I am personally more happy when I focus on enjoying my food and fitness than when I’m staring in the mirror, hopelessly comparing myself to the photo-shopped model on any given fitness magazine. Happiness isn’t always found in a tiny waist or flawless face.
Thank You
Much love to all of you semi-healthy readers and thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support and comments on yesterday’s post. My heart is full and I’m even more excited about where life is going today. Ask Dave—I couldn’t get to sleep last night. I was twitching and anxious to make things happen.
Let me tell you, it’s a good feeling.
Here’s to trying the things you’ve always wanted to do but have been too scared to do them. Here’s to living life and diving into a bowl of delicious, chocolatey semi-healthy goodness!

Thank you to Fairlife for giving me the opportunity to get creative in the kitchen and fall in love with semi-healthy eating again. And for making the best freaking chocolate milk Dave or I have ever tasted, that’s lactose-free, uber healthy, and comes from happy cows to boot!
Check out my other recipe I created for Fairlife here.
Tell me….
What’s your favorite frozen treat?
What is one thing you’ve been afraid to try for no real reason?
PS I’m all about Pinterest this year, so I would LOVE IT if you could pin one (or two!) of these images!

This looks awesome! I pinned it so I can try it next time I have ripe bananas. 🙂 And I need to find that Fairlife stuff. I’ve never heard of it, but I’m all about lactose-free if at all possible!
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
Thank you for pinning, Jessie!! Fairlife is awesome but it’s only in Colorado and Minnesota for now. I know they are expanding though!! I’m with ya on needing lactose-free!
Tina@GottaRunNow
I make something similar, but I add peanut butter to it. I need to start adding sprinkles like you did – pretty!
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
Ohhh peanutbutter! Sounds amazing, Tina!!

Not to be critical …I love!! Your blog. But recently I can’t even read it because of all the pop ups? I realize you need traffic…If I subscribe will they stop?
thanks!!
<3
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
Oh man thanks for letting me know, Nikki! I only know of one pop-up and that’s for the e-mail subscription and it’s set so that once you x out of it, it won’t show up for another week. Maybe I should change it to two weeks? I do think it stops after you subscribe because I’ve subscribed just to test it out and I don’t see it anymore, but you shouldn’t feel obligated to do so!

I haven’t tried banana soft serve yet either, but I have to say I love how many sprinkles you brought to your ice cream party. Funny story: For one of my birthdays in college my roommates gave me a giant tupperware of sprinkles they had stolen from the cafeteria, because they noticed I hit drowned my soft serve in them every night at dinner 🙂
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
Dude sprinkles make everything better! You’re roomies knew you too well haha! They make an every day occasion feel all special and whatnot. 😉
Kim @ Hungry Healthy Girl
Yum! I love banana soft-serve. I’ve never seen that milk… I’ll have to be on the lookout.
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
It’s only in Minnesota and Colorado for now, but they are expanding! It’s the same company that makes CorePower, so it’s good stuff!
Ashley
This looks amazing!! … I was wondering what kind of sprinkles you used?
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
Thanks so much, Ashley! The sprinkles are Winston’s jimmies! 🙂
