Girls on the Run 5K in the Twin Cities!

October 10, 2013 by Amanda R DeWitt

Full disclosure: I get to run this 5K for free in exchange for a post about the fun details.

I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to redeem myself. From what? Well, I signed up for a 10-mile race in support of Girls on the Run, but ended up sick and injured (and freaked out by big city crowds) on race day. I did succeed with my fundraising goals with the help of YOU lovely people, but I still feel like I let people down by not actually running the race.

Fortunately there is a Girls on the Run 5K coming up…the one that the girls race! It takes place on Saturday, November 16th at 9am in the twin cities area and I want you to join me! This is the first time that Girls on the Run is opening up the race to the community and we can be a part of it!

For those of you who aren’t aware, Girls on the Run is a fantastic organization who’s mission is to “inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.” Basically over the course of 20 lessons, the girls are taught valuable life skills while training for a fun 5K race!

Here is more about the Girls on the Run Twin Cities program + curriculum:

•       Girls on the Run Twin Cities is an independent 501c3 youth development program that was founded by Mary Uran and Kori Fitschen in 2011.
•       Girls on the Run Twin Cities is part of Girls on the Run International, founded by Molly Barker in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1996.

•       We envision a world where every girls knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.

•       The 20-lesson curricula empowers girls with a greater sense of self-awareness, a sense of achievement, a foundation in team building and a commitment to enhancing their communities, all in order to help them become strong, content, healthy, confident women.

•       Each session is led by trained female coaches that guide and mentor girls through the fun and uplifting curriculum.
•       Lessons include topics to enable girls to effectively problem solve and remain strong during adolescence.  Topics include dealing with body image and the media, resisting peer-pressure, making healthy decisions, and contributing to the community.
•       Girls on the Run is NOT a program that train girls to compete at an elite running level.
•       Girls on the Run is NOT affiliated with any particular religion, though our program has been delivered at a variety of institutions that may be affiliated with a particular religion.
•       Girls on the Run coaches do NOT need to be elite runners.  Any woman, who lives a healthy lifestyle and is committed to improving the lives of girls, can serve as a coach.

Mary and I

I had the pleasure to meet Mary, one of the founders of Girls on the Run Twin Cities at the Healthy Living Summit. Not only did she lead me to tears with a touching story about a girl who’s life perspective was changed through the program, she motivated me to seriously think about what I’m looking for in volunteering opportunities.

Well, I have a serious passion for helping ladies feel better about themselves since I have (and still do at times) battled a lot of self-esteem and negativity issues myself PLUS I am all about teaching healthy habits…especially at a young age! (Cue dinging of bells to signal the winner!!) I am definitely sticking with Girls on the Run for as long as I can.

So if you are in the twin cities area, please consider joining me at the Girls on the Run 5K! You will get to experience first hand how amazing this program is and will likely get excited about humanity…or am I the only one who gets really excited and motivated when I see truly self-less people helping others?

More 5K Details:

·         Girls on the Run 5k is taking place on Saturday, November 16th at 9 a.m.
·         Community Runners can register here: Community Registration Page
·         The run starts and ends near the Nokomis Community Center at Lake Nokomis.
·         There will be a fun group warm-up before the race and food and festivities after the race.
·         Registrants receive a race t-shirt.
·         This is a fun run and will not be chipped or timed.

Who’s with me?? Let’s run for the girls!!

PS I am playing around with different signatures…which one do we like?

I would absolutely love to be a part of Girls on The Run! Unfortunately I’m out of town the day of the 5k. Someday I’d like to start a northern mn chapter, however the fundraising goals just to start up are so intimidating!

Oh my gosh that would be awesome if you could get one set up!! I’m sad you won’t be able to come down for the 5K but we should meet up sometime! I will be making a MN bucket list soon (since I just moved here from Nebraska and will probably be moving back there in the next few years) and I have a few things to add in the Northern region! 🙂

Love this! I definitely could have benefited from a program like this when I was a little girl! I love how it incorporates both aspects of health…mental AND physical!

    I like #3 for the signature! 🙂
