I might be a tad late on this recap since it happened almost a full week ago (details..), but I still wanted to share it! As I mentioned, I planned on running the Girls on the Run 5K this past Saturday, and ran it I did!
A few months back I decided I wanted to get involved with Girls on the Run. I checked out the website, contemplated exactly how involved I wanted to get…and then forgot about it. A week or so later, I decided to sign up for the Twin Cities 10 mile race and noticed there weren’t any slots available…unless I ran for a charity! And what do ya know, Girls on the Run was one of the options! I signed up to be a “solemate” and got to work. Although fundraising isn’t the easiest thing to do, I managed to meet my goal by the time the race came around, but then I had some running issues. I felt like I had let the group down since I wasn’t actually running the race, so this 5K felt a little bit like a redeeming run.
I hadn’t run since my previous 5K two weeks before in Chicago (Hot Chocolate Run with Katie), and before that I probably hadn’t run for a month due to my aforementioned running issues. This relatively short race was quite a shock to me since after the first mile I kind of felt like I was dying. It’s funny because when you are doing something like training for a half marathon and are running 2-3 times a week, 3 miles seems like nothing. Take a few weeks off and whew! My lungs were burning and my knees were sore the next day! But it still felt great to get a run in the chilly weather for a great cause!
The energy at the 5K was of course amazing because these girls were pumped about running! Many of them had their hair spray painted funky colors and it was simply a joy to see them cross the finish line on that chilly Saturday morning.
I’m also happy I got to meet up with Hyedi, whom I had met previously at a practice run with some of the “solemates.” Something cool about meeting Hyedi there was that we found out we were both also attending the Healthy Living Summit! Small world, right? I had the opportunity of running with her and two of her friends which made the race all the more fun and challenging…or am I the only one that has a hard time talking and trying to run at the same time?
Well friends, it’s time for Dave and I to head out to see the next Hunger Games movie!! I am so excited and I don’t even care if that sounds nerdy!
Have a great weekend! <3
PS Thanks Hyedi for the group pictures!
Tell me…
What was the last race you ran?
Can you run and talk at the same time?

Let’s do that again soon! Maybe a winter run? Hope you loved Catching Fire — I can’t wait to see it again!
