Monday Moves: Accountability

June 17, 2013 by Amanda R DeWitt

Hello Friends!

So it’s been about a month since my half-marathon.  With that half-marathon there was a training plan set up by Hal Higdon.  Although I barely stuck to my mileage, strength training or cross-training, it was nice to have a plan laid out before me so that I would have some idea of what workouts I had to fit in each week.

I’ve decided that I need to get back into some sort of routine with or without a race ahead of me.  I have never been a stickler for hitting every single workout (see my half training log), but the thing is….you’re more likely to do your workout if you schedule it.

Since I have a blog…I have a way to be accountable.  I am planning on putting up my training plan each week and then following up with the results.

Sound like a good idea?  I sure hope so!

Here’s what I ended up doing last week:

I would like to count all the moving and unpacking I did as workouts…but I view workouts or exercise as planned movement that is repetitive in nature (the definition of exercise).

Now unpacking and moving does count for physical activity or movement that you do during the day.  I have been bustin’ my booty to get things unpacked and to get all that friggin’ cardboard and trash out of here so that counts for something!!

Wednesday I finally got around to an actual workout thanks to the Purely Twins!  What I like about their workouts is that they are very customizable with the number of rounds you can do PLUS they always point out modifications and encourage you to go at your own pace (we all know how much I advocate being safe while working out).  I suppose I also like them because the workouts can be done at home with nothing but yourself and a pair of weights if you want.

I started an Arms/Back/Chest playlist on YouTube and added their video…so check it out!

It was so great to hang out with Becky and her fur baby on Thursday while getting a bit of a workout in.  We were going to go for a run, but my back was hurting…I’m guessing from all of the moving of heavy boxes and furniture and sleeping for days on a pull-out bed.

Not wanting to experience another back injury, I requested that we walk…even though I felt bad because this girl is training for a full marathon!

Friday I FINALLY got out to the trail around our apartments.  It was unbelievably gorgeous!  It’s crazy how many ponds and/or lakes you find in the area.  Maybe that’s why they call it the land of 10,000 lakes….

It was very humid and I didn’t bring water with me so when I returned from my 2-ish mile run I was beet red, but still feeling very accomplished.

That was my very first run since my half-marathon!

Here’s the plan for this week…wish me luck!

Have a great week everyone!

I had an internship in Minnesota (many years ago) and absolutely LOVED it. There were great trails and parks all along the river. great job making your plan – I need to get onto a plan or something!

I think I need to start planning things out. I’ve been winging it so far and then finding some weeks I’m not getting anything done. But then like this weekend… got sooo much done I’m so tired! moving boxes out of my moms basement, moving them into my apartment, moving all the furniture out of my dining room so I could steam clean the carpet, carrying my little niece around, and then swimming. Tired… happy, and tired 🙂

Okay I didn’t really workout for a couple of weeks while moving because seriously…moving is hard work (which it seems like you are working out)!! I personally think that if we are doing enough physical activity…we don’t need as many scheduled workouts!

Love your MPLS photo!! 🙂 And DO NOT WORRY about walking last Thursday – seriously! My body needed a break and I ended up getting a run in over the lunch hour. Can’t wait for our run this Thursday! P.S. Moving is freakin’ hard hard work – Which means your muscles gotta be super toned by now 🙂

Wow, such a pretty view! I’m completely more accountable when I have a plan. That’s why I race so much, I think. I know what I have to do!

Right now, though, I’ve been doing boot camp classes, which is nice because all I have to plan is setting my alarm clock – and the variety of workouts is outstanding! Loving it.

I think that’s why I’ve been signing up for races the past 3 years..there’s a plan with it! But what you’re doing (planning to workout at a certain time) definitely works too!
