It’s the little things, right? Having to share a fridge with a roommate is kind of a pain. Since you’re not sharing money…you’re not likely to share food when you just have a roommate. This means that you will probably have doubles of certain things…like bread, milk, eggs, salad, fruit, veggies, etc and that can make the fridge super crowded.
I’m also one of those people that gets VERY protective of food. Unless I say it’s okay for you to have some of my leftovers…you better keep your paws off. It’s that serious.
When Dave and I moved into this place, I realized that I would probably be the one doing the grocery shopping and that I could arrange the fridge mostly how I wanted. The ginormous fridge and freezer were all…MIIINEEE. muahahaha! Okay and kind of Dave’s too.
Anyhow, it’s exciting to stock our new fridge with fresh food! Poor Dave lived in hotels most of the past two years so it’s great to be able to get non processed/fast-food into him. And I think he secretly eats worse when I’m not around. 😉
So, it’s time for another WIAW or What. I. Ate. Wednesday. I’ve done quite a few of these posts…I can’t believe this is number 67!
Funny story.
When I was writing up Monday’s post about the craziness of the movers showing up at our door unexpectedly, I realized when I was titling the folder for the post (organization is key when dealing with hundreds of blog posts) that I had signed all of the moving papers with the completely wrong date.
I signed them 7-6-13. Seriously…what the what? Can you say frazzled and confused??
Back to the eats!!
Breakfasts have consisted of my lovely peanut butter toasts as well as some coffee from the glorious machine known as a Keurig. I made a mixture that was amazing!!
Nutty Coffee: Hazelnut coffee + hazelnut syrup + unsweetened almond milk.
I was honestly a little worried about buying unsweetened almond milk since I usually buy Silk Vanilla…but so far it tastes great in my coffee and my cereal! And it’s better for me without all the sugar!
Lunch on Monday was leftover Chipolte bowl that I added some more lettuce to (scooping off the browned guacamole…bleh) and topped with cottage cheese.
Yesterday’s lunch was a funny-looking half sandwich. I wasn’t too hungry, so only pulled out one piece of bread, but as I got too excited about all of the different veggies and things to put on the sandwich…so it got a tad messy.
The finished product involved ham, pepperjack cheese, spicy mustard, lettuce, and peppers.
For dinner on Sunday we made hamburger helper.
Seriously I am so happy that Dave is cool with hamburger helper because that’s the stuff I grew up on! It’s such comfort food but it’s also very versatile. You can change the meat you buy for it (we used 90% lean beef) and you can and SHOULD add some veggies to it! This time we added edamame and then a bit of cayene and seasonings for a very hot + hearty meal in our new home.
I am really patting myself on the back for last night’s dessert.
I had strawberries that I knew I wanted to use, but berries are kind of one of those foods that I had a hard time convincing myself to eat. You can imagine that if I grew up on hamburger helper, there might not have been much of a push for fresh fruits and veggies. I think every time I tried a berry growing up, it was too tart for me. My mouth puckers just thinking about biting into a berry of any kind.
Basically I knew I didn’t want to eat strawberries by themselves, so I got creative. I had just unpacked and organized the entire kitchen yesterday (a dozen or more boxes…can I get a high five??) and I knew I had some containers of frosting…why not add some frosting for sweetness? I also like a crunch in my meals, so why not add some healthy “rabbit food cereal” as Dave calls it?
I got Dave (and myself) to eat strawberries AND healthy cereal by adding some frosting and calling it dessert. 🙂
Sad story about this cookie dough…our oven isn’t working! When we picked this up at the store, I really wanted to bake cookies, but didn’t have all of the supplies so our plan was to do the break-and-bake cookies. Dangit. Good thing we both like raw cookie dough! Hey, I’ve been eating raw dough since I can remember and nothing’s happened…blame my mom for my bad habit there?
With all of the unpacking I’ve basically been in the apartment the past two days, save from taking out the trash and a couple of loads of cardboard for recycling. I think my plan for today is to venture down to the gym (it’s all rainy out..otherwise I want to check out that trail by the apartment still!!).
Wish me luck finding the gym…our apartment complex is kind of a maze!
How do you get yourself (or others) to eat healthy foods?
Do you eat raw cookie dough?

I am SUPER protective over my food, too! I used to have roommates in college who would eat my food without asking and I was NOT happy about it! 😉

haha I got a little weird about it even with my last roommate…sending her texts “Did you eat my cereal??” She always said no…but I was so paranoid I was certain she did. Food is serious business. 😉

Oh gosh, I love the feeling of having domain of your own fridge! When Brandon and I moved into together, I quickly took over. He knows that the fridge is mine and not to mess with it. Everything has its place.
So excited for you and your new apartment and it sounds like things are going well for you! I’ve been MIA because my job is taking of my liiiiife, but I’ll catch up with you soon!

Okay I’m glad I’m not the only one who wants a spot for everything in the fridge. And pantry. And closet. 😉
E-mail me soon!! Miss you!!

wooo having your own fridge (and space in the kitchen) to share with somebody that you share the groceries / grocery bill with is amazing. i’ve shared with Mark for almost 4 years (holy cow), and we still run out of room. next purchase (when we find a more permanent home): deep freeze.
i love raw cookie dough. my friend Sal (from pakistan) thought it was weird that we Americans have cookie dough flavored things (ice cream, etc.) because he had never heard of eating raw cookie dough before coming here.

Whoa 4 years is a good long time!! I hope we don’t run out of room…no place for a deep freeze in an apartment lol

Your fridge looks so beautifully empty/organized!! I love it. I also love that unsweetened vanilla Silk, it’s so good on top of a cereal mess or mixed into a smoothie.
Good luck with the rest of the unpacking!

Thanks Sarah!! I need to find our blender haha!

Eating 4 Balance
Great idea to add some vegetables to the Hamburger Helper. I’ve honestly never had the stuff. We grew up on Macaroni and cheese in our house 🙂
And oven or not I would be eating that cookie dough unbaked no doubt! Way better in that form in my opinion.
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
YESSS cookie dough!!! You should try hamburger helper!! Just noodles and spice packet! 🙂
