So I was feeling pretty productive and patting myself on the back when I finished unpacking all of our boxes in two days AND finding a spot for almost everything. This included all of the new gadgets we bought.
We could see the floor, dishes were put away and we were even able to cook dinner last night! I had big plans today to apply to school, break down all of the boxes, get them to the recycling center and explore the nearby walking trail.
Oh and I was gonna write this post on how awesome I was at moving and share some fun moving pictures. And remind you all that today is the last day for my giveaway….sorry you only have a few hours left!
Then I got the phone call this morning, “Uh, this is blahblah moving company. We’re at your front door.”
My heart started pounding and my mind started racing. Oh yeah, we have more crap than this.
BUT WAIT!!
Weren’t they supposed to warn us beforehand?? There are a ton of empty boxes in front of the door…I need to move them! I should fold up the hide-a-bed into the couch so we have more room for boxes. I just made my peanut butter toast…I haven’t even had my coffee! I need to put on a bra!
Dave was supposed to be here to help! Answer your phone Dave!! I don’t know where we want all the furniture!
107 boxes, 3 hours, and 1 frazzled Amanda later, I was signing a zillion papers saying I had received all of the items. Then another hour arranging paths to essential areas (such as the fridge and the couch where I would eat my leftover Chipolte burrito bowl).
After attempting to finish my lunch (the guac had turned brown…blech), I finally heard from Dave. He was super busy at work (actually interviewing people in a basement with no cellphone reception) and felt really awful that he wasn’t there to help.
I have been realizing something.
The theme in my life is still learning how to be independent. How to be confident on my own.
I thought that part of my life was during the past couple of years when Dave and I were dating long distance. I had to re-learn (after three years of dating and seeing Dave on a daily basis) how to be social on my own, how to be fine hanging out by myself, and to make decisions on my own. It’s funny because you would think that moving in with my boyfriend would make me more co-dependent, but it’s proving to be quite the opposite.
I still need to make my own friends. I still need to be able to go places in this new city on my own. I still need to pursue my own interests and not rely on someone else constantly for validation. With Dave’s busy schedule I am the one making phone calls and attempting to manage details in the apartment.
So while I am happy to grow in this area, I’m even more excited to be able to help Dave out. He has always been there for me, even in the rough times where I’ve been plagued with self-doubt, pity, and basically unable to cope with basic life stressors. Now it’s my turn to be a blessing to him!
I have about a month where I won’t be working or going to school. I have this whole time to chose to be productive with my time, to manage this apartment, make some new friends and help Dave get settled into his new job and life. I can and will succeed at this!
I like this realization. I like the possibility of what this season in life will bring. I also now like standing up to the haters (more on that later).
Because I’m confident I’m right where I’m supposed to be. Let the adventure begin!
How much do you love moving? 😉
Have you ever been moved by a moving company before? This was my first experience!
Linking up to Katies Marvelous Monday post where we begin each week on a positive note:
Kim
I actually love every thing about moving – packing, unpacking, finding new homes for stuff….I always like to see how fast I can complete a move (weird, I know!).
Good luck getting settled!!!
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
haha it is pretty fun finding new places for things…except this time we moved to a fairly small place, combining all of our possessions…so a little challenging! 🙂

Ah unpacking is the absolute worst! I wish you the best of luck. I totally get what you mean about still working on independence – I feel like it’s a process that happens over years, regardless of whether or not you live with someone!

Thanks Melissa!

So yes, moving can be stressful and crazy (and YES I do kind of enjoy parts of moving), but I freaking LOVE this post! I feel like we just watched you have this major light bulb moment and I’m so excited for this new chapter in your life. I hope you got my text, I was trying to send happy thoughts your way! 🙂

Unpacking is the worst! But it will all look awesome and be worth it when you are finished and all settled :).
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
Yes I can’t wait to be all settled!!

I don’t blame you one bit on being a bit frazzled. Moving is tough! We’ve moved a few times now (twice across the country) & usually do it ourselves, aside from the first time hiring a big semi-truck to drive our belongings… the last time we did it we rented a Penske truck & did it ourselves, but hired a moving crew to haul the boxes up (we’re on the third floor). It was nice to have guys bringing everything in & to not have to do EVERYTHING.
Glad your stuff has arrived & you’re handling things ok. Applying to school is very stressful too (I just recently had to do that too), hang in there! 🙂 Enjoy the new apartment!

Ohh that sounds good to just hire a moving crew!! The thing is…Dave’s company moves him for free so it’s kind of hard to argue with free!
Thanks for the words of encouragement Karey!!

We can be friends, right? 🙂 I am the total opposite of you – I am MUCH too independent and am still having co-dependency issues after being married for 3 years! I like to do what I want when I want, haha – but it is hard when you move to a new city with only knowing your man. I can totally relate to your situation and can’t wait to introduce you to Minneapolis! P.S. Do you like wine? I have an awesome happy hour place that offers super cheap (like $4) bottles of wine. Dave is invited too. We’ll make him and Kyle become friends 😉
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
YES we can still be friends!! I think since we are the opposite in this area…we can totally learn from each other!! 🙂
And obviously Dave and Kyle need to be friends! 😉

Ah how cool you had the time to do all that 🙂

Hate moving! Mostly because I like to have my stuff all in one place and moving tends to disrupt that sense of order 🙂 I love your attitude about your independence within your relationship though! I get so caught up in him on the rare occasions I do get to see the BF that I forget how well I am able to do on my own (not that I don’t miss him… haha). But your attitude is refreshing and I love it!
Also the frazzled Amanda sounds exactly like a frazzled Sarah… can’t tell you how many time I’ve had to run to get the door, only to realize later that I was talking to whatever salesman/religious outreacher without a bra on!
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
Yes I think that’s part of it!! Disrupting the order!
And it’s funny you said that last part because I had to put on pants and a sweater because I knew it would take awhile to find a bra. The second they went for their second load of things I ran into the bedroom to find one though haha
