Hello lovely readers. How have you been? I forgot to tell you all that I was heading out of town last weekend to run the Chicago Hot Chocolate Run with my beautiful blend Katie! But if you follow me on Instagram, you probably already knew that!
It was about a 6 hour drive, so I had to get creative with semi-healthy car eats. And when I was in the city, I had to try the most delicious foods…let me tell you all about it WIAW or What I Ate Wednesday style with Jenn at Peas and Crayons!
Saturday Am
I headed east through the state of Wisconsin early Saturday morning. And when I say early I mean 9am by the time I actually hit the road. Coffee was essential, as was peanut butter toast.
I ended up getting more coffee at a funky coffee shop next to the gas station I stopped at. It’s the little things, right? This latte was downed with a food bar of some sort…shocking that there is no picture of its evidence.
I decided at the next stop that I should probably have some cheese since I was in Wisconsin, afterall.
Saturday Pm
I arrived at Katie’s around 3:30pm and after a quick tour of her adorable new place, we rushed into the city to pick up our hot chocolate packet. This included some hot chocolate sampling of course. After throwing our marshmallow wishes into the enormous cup of cocoa, we decided we needed some real food ASAP.
We both downloaded the Urban Spoon app and found a local burger place called Burger Point that had a great rating and that was close enough to walk to. We were not disappointed.
You order your burger at an ipad (fancy, right?) and you can customize your order any way you want! Katie created her own veggie burger, while I went with #1 The Burger Point which was “grass fed burger, pepperjack, double smoked bacon, roasted chili peppers, cage-free egg, pretzel roll.” I also added avocado for $1 but I might do without next time since it just made the burger messier. This was my first experience with a pretzel roll…and my goodness have I been missing out! With the buttery pretzel roll, the spice from the peppers and cheese, the runny egg yolk and the amazing quality of the meats I could not have asked for a better burger. My mouth is literally watering just remembering right now.
I also ordered the regular fries with sea salt, but was not impressed with the limp potatoes and luke-warm temperature. I paid a total of $14 for a combo so the prices are similar to a sit-down restaurant like Chili’s or Applebees however you still order at the counter and pick up your own food. Despite the price and flimsy fries, I would do it all over again for that juicy, spicy, egg-drenched burger!
Sunday Am
I ate some almond butter on rice toast with tons of water in the car at about 5am. I am so glad Katie drove because I would have been a mess in the traffic we encountered.
After the hot chocolate race we had some chocolate. Crazy right?
(PS Can you see my goosebumps? It was a tad chilly that morning!!)
Then we had the pleasure of meeting up with Becky for brunch at Meli’s Cafe, a place she recommended close to her apartment in the city. I had the biggest omelet I’ve ever seen…it’s funny when restaurants say “3 egg omelet” and you know it’s more like 5. It was pretty darn delicious with avocado and jalapenos.
By the time we made it back to Katie’s, it was time to shower and hit the road again. Katie pointed out that I hadn’t even been there 24 hours! Am I crazy or what??
Once in the car, I was hungry again. Or sleepy. Sometimes it’s hard to tell. I had a banana right away and then some nuts I had picked up on the way in along with a can of diet dew.
Sunday pm
I stopped around 6pm at McDonald’s. Yeah, I know. My usual fast food for driving is Subway, but lately their veggies have looked less than appetizing. Has anyone else noticed that? Anyways I had a premium chicken wrap and seriously it was uh-mazing. Especially for Micky-D’s! ๐
That’s my Chicago eats in a nutshell!
PS Make sure you check out my 30 Days of Thanks Challenge!
PPS I think I might slow down on the blogging this month to just focus on being thankful for what I have each day. I will be doing the Thankful Thursday link-ups as promised and have a few guest posts lined up for Mondays though! ๐
What do you eat when you’re on the road?
Have you been to Chicago? What did you eat there?
Becky @ Olives n Wine
Oh my goodness, that burger!!! You definitely had some delicious eats while in Chicago ๐ And I agree, that omelet was SO much more than 3 eggs!

You have to try that place Becky!! Lots of iron in a burger!! ๐

I wonder if next time they’d let me make a burger-less burger? Pretzel bun + avocado + veggies and I’m all in! And maybe their sweet potato fries would be better? Or maybe we should tell them we’re bloggers and we share our bites on the internet and they better beware? ๐
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
Can we please tell someone they “better beware” next time we are out eating together?? lol #bloggerthreats

I went to chicago my senior year of college and I loved it! I thought it was so fun! Looks like you had a great time ๐

We had a blast! It’s just cool being in a big city like that for me. ๐

Yes! I must have Subway-ed myself out, but I haven’t been a fan lately. I’m sure I’ll return there again soon enough. We just got a Jersey Mike’s sub place and I’ve been cheating on Subway with Mike.
That sounds like such a great race! Mmm hot chocolate.
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
Ohh Christmas movies!! I’m busting out Elf ASAP!! ๐
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
haha we are both cheating on Subway! I think we have a Jersey Mike’s close by! I actually remember taking a picture of it and sending it to my friend whom we call Jersey and his name is actually Mike. Seriously though, Subway veggies have been looking gross. And I’m one of those people that refuses to eat brown lettuce (why people don’t check the veggies at Subway before they get them put in their sandwich is a mystery to me).

Even though I saw some of this on insta, its good to get the commentary with it ๐
Impressive mcdonalds was able to produce something decent there- props to them making changes! Here its still taking baby steps!
Next time I travel to the states (hopefully next year!) Chicago is on my list!

You have to let me know when you come! Blogger meet up!!

Holy YUM!!! That burger!! With the egg, and the avocado, AND THE PRETZEL BUN?! I’ve been dying to try a good pretzel roll…the man-friend stopped at Wendy’s on our drive to Cleveland last month and got one of their chicken sandwiches on a pretzel roll and I tried a bite, but it tasted like nothing! I’m convinced there is better out there so I’m not giving up hope yet! lol
I hate stopping in a places, because I tend to be pretty picky when it comes to fast food and I’m almost never satisfied so I always always ALWAYS pack a butt-load of car snacks…fruit, nuts, protein bars, and of course LOTS of water!
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
That was the first pretzel bun I’ve tried and it was seriously amazing. The burger hit the spot!!
I had snacks in the car, but I just got way to hungry for snacky things…my hunger attacked and I stopped at the first place haha. It is helpful to pack food though so I’m not spending so much and it’s always healthier! ๐
