(No friends, I’m not pregnant.)
When my friend Laci asked a couple of weeks ago if she could hire me to make cake pops for her baby gender reveal party…I said of course!
I’ve been working on saying, “yes” to opportunities, like those showcasing my cake-popping talents. 😉
When she told me that the purpose of the cake pops was to reveal the gender of her little one…I wondered how the heck that was going to work.
First of all, this would mean that I’d have to keep the gender a secret…from her and from mutual friends.
Secondly, I’d have to make sure that the white and green candy melts would cover up the color inside.
Since I am a little on the crazy side when it comes to baking projects, I said bring it on!
I did, however, tell Laci that her guy (who was the only one who knew the gender) would have to wait until the last minute to tell me..to make it easier.
When Chad (Laci’s guy) texted me, “It’s a girl” I got super excited, realized I couldn’t talk to anyone about it, and got to work.
I have made cake pops and cake balls before, however I’ve never counted the amount of pops per cake mix before.
It turns out that 3 boxes of cake mix makes about 125 cake pops. Although the sizes vary, it is helpful to know that it does not take 3 boxes to make 60 cake pops…which is the amount that was requested. Sorry Lace!
I also found out that if you want to bake three cakes, make cake pops, and decorate them all in one day by yourself, it will take ALL DAY.
Cake Pop Baby Gender Reveal
Makes: 125 cake pops/cake balls
Time: (so you know what you’re getting into)
90 minutes: baking cakes
60 minutes: letting cakes cool
60 minutes: mixing up cake balls
90 minutes: freezing cake balls
4 hours: melting candy melts, decorating, letting melts dry 30 minutes and repeating
This is all approximate and I will note that some of the time is just spent waiting so you can do other things around the house in between. 🙂
Ingredients:
- 7 bags of candy melts (approximate)
- 3 cake mixes
- 3 cans of frosting
- cake pop sticks (I found lollipop sticks at a craft store)
- cups or mugs to prop up the cake pops to dry
- sprinkles/decorations
- large mixing bowl
I also added some pink sprinkles..for sparkle 😉 |
How To:
- Add food coloring to cake batter if desired.
- Bake cakes according to package. Let cool for an hour.
- Crumble cakes into a large mixing bowl.
- Add desired food coloring to frosting. I found a bright pink to add to the already pink vanilla frosting. Approximately 3/4 can frosting to each cake.
- Mash with (washed) hands.
- Roll into cake balls. Put the sticks into as many cake pops as you can and still fit them in the freezer. Place on cookie sheets and put in the freezer for 90 minutes. The colder the cake balls are, the easier they are to work with. This is the main key to keeping them on the stick.
- Heat up candy melts according to the instructions on the package.
- Dip cake pop in the candy melt mixture. Cover remaining surface area using a spoon. Sprinkle cake pops and/or decorate quickly. Set into a cup or mug (depending on the length of the stick.) to dry (see first photo).
I would like to point out that since Laci requested I use green and white for colors, I had to look for a cute green color.
All I found was Christmas tree green and bright puke green.
It’s a good thing she hired such an expert that could come up with a useful color from those two. 😉
How did it go?
Well Laci and everyone at the party was very happy it’s a girl!
Cheers all around!
I’m happy Laci asked me to spend the day creating over a hundred little balls of pink cake goodness.
I learned more about the cake-pop making process AND learned that I am super uncomfortable talking money when it comes to charging for my services. Must get better at this next time!
Congrats to Laci and Chad!! So excited for you!!
P.S. I babysit!
Have you ever been to a party like this?
Do you have kids? Did you find out the gender of the baby beforehand?
[…] Cake pops are a labor of love for sure, but they go over really really well. They look adorable, they are different than the usual cake, and they give the party a fancy feeling. I’ve made them for Christmas, birthdays and was even commissioned to make them for a baby gender reveal party! […]
