We made it back to Nebraska this past weekend! There was much eating, drinking and laughing and I even managed to stay active!
Friday
Friday I got my long run in after a yummy cup of coffee and my usual toast with nut butter (have you seen my recent cashew butter creation?? I need to make that again ASAP).
Slow and steady 5 mile run-walk on the treadmill while watching The Walking Dead (eep it’s back on in 3 weeks!!)
Then it was time to eat as fast as possible, shower and hit the road for 7 hours. I’d love to say it was smooth sailing, but when I went to take over for Dave mid-way, I definitely backed into an RV in the parking lot. And they filed a claim for a one-inch crack. sigh
Saturday
I got to hang out with sister Courtney at her gym taking a yoga/tai chi/Pilates class. We definitely got called out for taking this selfie, but the class was fun and I was even sore the next day. I haven’t been to yoga in way too long and it just felt GOOD to get all stretched out. And to be reminded that I need to work on my balance.
The main reason we headed back to Nebraska was for a high school friend’s wedding (hi Brenda!).
I got to sport my new Target find—that dress was about $8 on the clearance rack.
Can you say steal? I love the color and while it’s a little form fitting for me…I liked how sassy it made me feel.
I even did my hair! Curled it with a straightener. Yep. You heard me right. I was so dang proud I took photos.
We had a blast at the reception where we ate yummy food, made friends with the only two people at our table (we made plans to open a gym together when we get back to Omaha—ha!), danced and of course watched the Nebraska game that was on in the bar.
Dave even swiped some wedding mints (snuck them in my purse!) that I’ve been munching on the past couple of days…he knows me too well!
Sunday
On Sunday we managed to get a bunch of the family together for a brunch at Dave’s parents’ casa. Much eating and laughing and volleyball-ing and watching baby Aaron do funny things ensued.
The outdoor “volleyball” consisted of everyone standing in a big circle and trying to keep the ball off the ground. Well, some of the boys turned it into hitting it as high up as possible and getting it stuck in a tree…
As usual, it was really hard to leave Nebraska. I feel like we get back home more than most people, but it just never feels like long enough.
[Tweet “It IS possible to stay active while traveling! “]
Aaand with all of the traveling (remember how I was JUST in Des Moines) and late nights and lack of sleep and bit of stress…I found myself sick on Tuesday.
Lovely sore throat/headache/achey body. No bueno. After working a full day Tuesday, I came home and crashed. Like fell asleep at my laptop (which is NOT like me at all) crashed. I had someone cover my shift on Wednesday so I could have a good night’s sleep and rest all day. I think that helped? I pretty much sat on the couch and ate popcorn and drank fluids all day.
Today I’m pumping myself full of painkillers and caffeine so I can go in to close at the cafe tonight. (<-okay I’m being dramatic…I took 2 Advil and am drinking a v8 energy) I will have Friday to be lazy (or at least to sit on the couch and work on my laptop) so hopefully I can be good and recovered enough to get in another long run! And to make something delicious while watching the Nebraska game Saturday night.
Wish me luck!
And stay tuned for another yummy pumpkin spice recipe coming your way! (Check out the first pumpkin spice recipe of the season here.)
How often do you visit home?
Do you shop the Target clearance racks?
PS I’m all about Pinterest this year, so I would LOVE IT if you could pin one (or two!) of these images!

Love the curled hair! My hair just does not keep curls….its sooooo thin!
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
Thanks girl! I am definitely grateful my hair holds a curl! Have you tried teasing yours a little? Hairspray helps too! 🙂
Melissa @ Mango About Town
You guys looked so cute for the wedding!! Happy you had a great time back home and hope you feel better!!
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
Thanks lady! I’m feeling a tad better…or maybe I just want to feel better haha. 🙂
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment
Your hair looks so nice! Love the curls.
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
Thanks, lady! I was so proud I finally figured out how to do it right!
Linda @ Fit Fed and Happy
Most people give up exercise while traveling which makes me frown…I’m glad you found some way to keep active! Good for you. I admire people like you.
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
Well thank you, Linda! It helps to keep it fun and to do it with family and friends! 🙂
Emily @ Sweets and Beets
It’s always so nice to go home, especially for something fun like a wedding! 🙂 I just booked my flight back home to Pennsylvania for the holidays. So excited! Ps your hair looks adorable !
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
That’s so exciting! Do you live pretty far away now? I can’t imagine needing a flight to get home..although 6-7 hours is a bit of a drive ha!
And thank you! 🙂
Diatta @ Femme Fitale Fit Club
Sounds like you had a fun time but like you – I am fighting a cold right now too!! That popcorn looks good. When I go to Target I tend to shop in the fitness apparel aisle.
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
Yeah it’s that time of year, right?? Changing seasons or something lol
I definitely have my fair share of Target C9 clothes! 🙂
Sami
Oooh, I love The Walking Dead and have been looking forward to the new season. I think I’d have to run if I were on the treadmill and watching walking dead, it makes me so anxious. 🙂
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
haha it does make me anxious watching it! It keeps my attention though! Plus I’ve seen the episodes before so it’s not TOO surprising. Although it gets tricky during times when I’d normally close my eyes…not such a great idea on a treadmill. 😉
Heather @ Housewife Glamour
I’ve never been successful with curling y hair with a straightener. I’ve tried several times but always revert back to the wand. Yours looks great! Thank you for linking up your favorites! Enjoy the weekend! xo
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
Thanks, girl! I kind of want to do a tutorial on the curling with a straightener thing…but I’m torn since this isn’t really a beauty blog. Maybe I should just say screw it and try it?
Cassie @ Almost Getting it Together
I always used to curl my hair with a straightener… well, wave it. Then I just got to lazy to do anything besides down or messy bun haha.
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
I’ve gotten SO lazy with my hair lately! It’s usually down and scrunched or in a ponytail so I was so excited with how good it looked! 🙂
jill conyers
The curls looks great! I wish my hair would hold a curl. Kind of a beachy look would be awesome. All of your pictures look happy and fun!
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
Thanks, Jill! I do love that my hair holds a curl..it’s naturally wavy so I’m sure that’s why! I bet you could make it work with some teasing and hairspray! 🙂
Nicole @ Fitful Focus
Looks like an awesome weekend (besides the crashing part)! That dress looks awesome on you (gotta love Target) and you’re hair came out great! I also curl my hair with a straightening iron – I’ve actually never used a curling iron!
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
haha yes awesome aside from the crashing! It baffles me you’ve never used a curling iron!
Cat
Well I’m living back with my parents at the mo so I guess my answer won’t count! Amazing job with the straighteners – I’ve never mastered that myself!
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
Maybe I should do a tutorial! Once I got the hang of it it was SUPER easy!
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment
I love what you did with your hair! So pretty. Love the dress from Target – I usually strike out there. Maybe I need to spend more time browsing. Have a great weekend!
Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
Thanks, lady! Yes, definitely spend more time browsing! I don’t always find something in the clearance rack, but when I do..I do a happy dance because it’s cheap and cute!
