So I’ve been trying to blog to the beat of my own drum.
Do you hear it?
What I really mean is that I don’t want other link-ups or bloggers to dictate my post titles or topics…unless they are particularly inspiring or get the writing wheels moving and I decide to write up a response to them. What I want to do instead is to write a post I want to write, THEN see if it can be linked up to any of my favorite blogger link-ups. (Not the other way around! This is my blog!) If so, I add all the links to the bottom of the post and then each morning try to remember which post needs to be linked up.
I’ve participated in tons of link-ups, often naming my posts after those link-ups…such as WIAW or What I Ate Wednesday. Now, I still adore Jenn and her fun foodie antics over at Peas and Crayons. I still want to link-up. But I don’t want to be restricted to posting only on Wednesdays. If I call it What I Ate Wednesday, you are probably going to expect the post to be on a Wednesday, right? And what if I want to post more than once a week? Last I checked, hump day only comes once a week.
[I know. I know. Is it weird that I had never watched the whole commercial before googling it? I’ve heard the “hump daaaeeee” zillions of times but I kind of didn’t know where it came from until everyone was sick of it. I’m cool like that.]
I have noticed that one of the things that has stressed me out about blogging in the past is NEEDING to have a post done on a certain day. You might notice that I’ve not done “Friday Finds,” “Thursday Thoughts,” or “Monday Moves” for quite some time for this very reason.
All that to say…WIAW is now SHN Eats. Or Semi-Health Nut Eats. Or SHN Foodspiration. Haven’t decided yet. I hope you lovely readers will be able to bear a name change. ๐ I might post this once a week, it might be once a month, or twice in a week. Who knows! The thing is, the post will come when I actually have delicious eats to share with you!
There might be a theme to my SHN Eats, but likely it will just be food I’ve gobbled up lately.
The purpose of SHN Eats is to:
a. Show you how and what I eat (I am at a healthy weight and by no means eat healthy 100% of the time…here is the evidence!),
b. Give you some meal/snack/drink ideas you can whip up in your own home,
c. Highlight a delicious restaurant at which I dined, and/or
d. Share a recipe creation. (although I might reserve recipes for their own special post)
So…did you come to see food and instead see a lot of words?
Okay here comes the eats of the premier SHN Eats.
I thought I might kick this all off with recapping the eats from the bootcamp and brunch we had Saturday. If you didn’t read yesterday’s traumatic post (you’re welcome for making you feel like a sane person after reading it), Lee and I hosted a twin cities bootcamp and brunch at my apartment complex.
I had planned on making a sweet egg bake thing to bring to the brunch, but woke up too late. My back-up plan (or possibly my plan all along) was Archer Farm’s Wild Blueberries + Multigrain mix waffles.
I’m a fan of using mixes, but I usually alter them to make them my own. I used almond milk instead of regular milk and melted butter instead of the oil. After the first two waffles, I realized I had forgotten the egg. Oops. I added it in and adjusted the mix accordingly as best as I could. I supposed they worked because Miss Lee called them “BA waffles” on her blog. ๐ I topped mine with peanut butter AND maple syrup!!
Lee hauled in some much needed Caribou coffee, Dave brought us some new-to-us Archer Farms Red Raspberry syrup and Alex supplied us with some OJ. We also had some delightful chia yogurt courtesy of Mellissa from A Fit + Spicy Life that I topped with muesli compliments of Seven Sundays. My favorite flavor (which I snagged) was Vanilla Cherry Pecan. Yum!! Honestly muesli tastes as good as granola to me, but it’s actually much healthier since they don’t use oils.
Back to waffles….these guys were pretty BA in my opinion!
But you’re gonna have to wait for the recipe! My blog, my rules!! muahaha
That’s a great stopping point, yes? I think my high school English teachers would approve as I ended my post along the same lines as I started my post. The thesis is clear: I have a blog and I put food pictures on it. Boom. Okay it’s clearly time for this girl to head to bed.
Tell me….
If you’re a blogger…what link-ups do you participate in?
If you’re a reader…do you skip over certain posts if they are titled after popular link-ups?
Do you make waffles from a mix?

PS I’m all about Pinterest this year, so I would LOVE IT if you could pin one (or two!) of these images. Just hover over the image to reveal the “pin it” button or use the handy dandy buttons at the bottom and top of each post to display the whole list of pins.

To be honest…I don’t read WIAW posts, but I also had 60 unread blogs in my reader this morning (and I was at zero when i went to be last night). So its just my way of thinning the heard. However, i love the name SHN Eats! It rolls off my tongue easily. Especially if you end up using SHN elsewhere, I use katie_lf for a lot of stuff (twitter, insta, pinterest, etc.), I based it off Healthy Tipping Point using CaitlinHTP as her twitter name.

I’m with you. I see those titles and skip them, and I’m sure I’ve missed a ton of interesting reads and recipes.
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
See! I tend to skip over WIAWs too for some reason..maybe because there are so many on one day??
My bloglovin’ gets crazy haha. I cleared it out but then added more blogs…I can pretty much never read all of the posts!
And thanks! I use SHN Favorites for my link-love posts so maybe I should use SHN more often!! ๐

I love this idea so much I’m stealing it. Not the SHN eats, but doing my own thing and not being restricted by wanting to participate in linkups. I think it was you a LONG time ago that commented on a WIAW post of mine and said I shouldn’t be posting recipes. But what if I want to post recipes? I’m gonna! I’m glad you’re doing this too because its YOUR blog, and if somebody doesn’t like you participating in a linkup because it doesn’t fit, they’ll tell you. I am pretty sure not a single person cares. And if they do, they have too much time on their hands.

ditto! i linking up to help out a friend or just support, but i also like your drum beat… your own!
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
Well there are TONS (like TONS) of link-ups you can join if you’re just sharing a recipe, but WIAW is about a bunch of eats (reading Jenn’s schpeel..however you spell that word haha). Check out my link-ups page!! The ones I join I like the blogger and they aren’t so huge that you get lost in the crowd. ๐

I like some linkups (like #MMAZ), but I totally get doing your own thing too. I go through phases in WIAW where I love it and where I skip over it. Depends where I”m at at the time. I really enjoyed sharing what I was eating during competition prep, but it’s not something I have felt like joining recently. Do what works for you! ๐
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
I don’t feel talented enough to join MMAZ! I might join a plain MM though! ๐ And yes sometimes I will skip two months of WIAW until I feel like I’ve eaten some interesting things or there is a theme.

I participate in loads of link ups – It helps me find new bloggers!!!! ๐ I love them. I found yours though through comments on other blogs! AND UHHH THOSE WAFFLES LOOK 100000% BA in my opinion ๐
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
YOU are 10000000% BA in MY opinion!! ๐
And yes part of the reason I like link-ups is finding new blogs!!
GiGi Eats Celebrities
I called myself a BA the other day, I got smashed for that, LOL!!! All in good fun ๐

I guess I’ve done a number of weekly posts without realizing they are link ups. I just like alliteration and it happens to fit my mood. Lately I’ve been doing more to see what other bloggers are up to. Also those waffles look divine!
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
Oh yes alliteration is fun!! I just started to feel trapped in posting certain things on certain days.
Thank you!! I will be sharing the recipe soon! ๐

I’ve stopped joining linkups, at least for now. I got sick of feeling like I needed to participate in them, expecting my readership to grow because of them, feeling like I need to find enough time to go back and check out others who participated, etcโฆso for now, until I feel like I’m in a better place with them or unless I feeling really inspired to join, I’m not. I think this is my way of blogging to my own drum – do you hear it? ๐
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
Exactly, Katie!! I hate that pressure! Especially having multiple days each week in my mind of posts that I need to link up to…I like writing a post and if it happens to fit..linking it up. Even if it’s linking it up 5 days later! ๐
