WIAW #78: I Like to Make Food at Work

September 25, 2013 by Amanda R DeWitt

I’m working at a cafe now which is fun in that it gives me all of these ideas for things to make, but then again it’s torture to work with food when you are hungry. If you’ve ever worked in the food industry, you know that you might not get a chance to eat until you are famished. So I’m not sure if the food I make is really that delicious or I’m just famished…but it does look pretty!

[For more about WIAW or What I Ate Wednesdays.]

Before work I make sure I have some sort of breakfast to eat on the way to work (during my 30-60 minute drive) or in between customers in the early hours of the morning. Lately it’s been toasted blueberry Kashi waffles.

kashi waffles with peanut butter and chocolate chips

Yes, occasionally I slather them with peanut butter and sprinkle on chocolate chips. I figure I’m running around at work and burn off the sugar. Also it tasted delightful.

I work the morning shift, so I am mostly making egg creations and smoothie for customers. This is possibly why I’ve been craving eggs lately and why I finally decided to make Dave the egg casserole he’s been hinting at for awhile now. It was delicious by the way.

I’ve been making myself egg breakfast-y things to eat on break at work as well.

I think this was one of my first creations before I thought we were allowed to take breaks so I was able to snap the picture at home.

egg sandwich on ciabatta
Ciabatta bread + 2 eggs (in omelet form) with black pepper + red pepper mayo + roasted red peppers + avocado + Swiss cheese

I took it home after 7+ hours of working with food but not eating a crumb, somehow had the brains to take a picture and then devoured it.

And there was one day I saw my boss making a chicken pizza and I had to have one. I was SO hungry. I drove to Target and picked up a California Pizza chicken pizza, added some chopped peppers and mozarella to it and threw half of in the toaster oven. It was quite satisfying.

Another rough day when I hadn’t eaten for 7 hours, the assistant manager had another gal make me our avocado turkey sandwich while I got ready to head home.

Ciabatta bread + black pepper mayo + romaine lettuce + turkey + avocado + tomato

My brain had started to turn foggy and I could not concentrate on what this assistant manager was telling me to do and kept messing things up. The next day my manager told me I need to start taking breaks. Winning!

I know I need to eat every 3-4 hours, but when no one else was taking breaks and no one told me I could take a break…I just went with the flow. That’s what you do at new jobs right?

It’s okay though because now I have my second breakfasts (or “elevensies”) and also take a snack or two to work so I don’t get all foggy brained and annoy my managers.

Or I take some extra smoothie, add spinach to it and have part of a green monster smoothie. Can you believe I had my first green smoothie ever a couple of weeks ago??

In other news, I’m going home for the weekend after work tomorrow! We have two weddings PLUS my little brother’s 21st birthday party to attend. I officially feel old.

*~Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut~*

Have you ever worked at a restaurant? Can you relate to feeling so. freaking. hungry!?
Do you drink green monsters?

Y’all have some delicious looking food where you work and that Bressert….yum! I used to wait tables and when we were slow, I would definitely chow down on the rolls. They were so good, but slightly dangerous. 😉

They didn’t let you take breaks? Booo! Though my last coffee shop we didn’t get breaks either and I don’t really get them (aside from lunch break) at my current job…BUT I would always just eat when I got hungry. Nobody wants to deal with a hangry katie… 😉

No one really takes breaks…the assistant manager heard me asking about breaks and she made it pretty clear she does NOT take breaks. Oh well, I need time to sit down and eat in a 7-8 hour period. 🙂

So the first sandwich you posted looks AH-MAZ-ING. Like, for reals. I’m pinning this just so I can remember to try it sometime! Also, where do you find red pepper mayo? Did you make it?

    • Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut

      September 25, 2013 at 3:51 pm

The restaurant makes it, but I bet you could google it! We use mayo bases and just add things to them. I found chipotle mayo at the store which is similar!

You know how I feel about sandwiches…and egg scrambles – so good! I used to work in a coffee shop and was surrounded by goodies all day long. It was really fun, but took a lot of willpower not to have scone for breakfast each morning 🙂 Glad to hear that things are going well!

Oh my gosh, honey! I’m glad you’re taking breaks now! Working like that isn’t good for you! That’s one great thing about working alone at night…even if I get a little busy with patients to scan, if I start to get to the point where I feel my blood sugar dropping, I take a break for a snack. Nobody there to tell me I can’t! 😉

Man, I haven’t had ciabatta bread in FOREVER but now you’ve got me craving it…and some eggs…and avocado! Haha! I can’t believe you just had your first green smoothie! I figured it was kind of a rite of passage for bloggers when they first come on the scene! 😉

Oh I’m a big believer in eating often haha that’s probably why my mind went all silly without food for so long because my body was like, “um what the heck??”

And the green smoothie thing I was avoiding because I kind of hate following trends…kind of to a fault. But I need to stop being so opposed to following that I don’t try things I want to try!

All of your sandwiched look delicious too, I would have a really hard time not stuffing my face if I worked there, so maybe it’s a good thing you are busy. 😉 (although snack breaks are always good!!!)
