I have a confession to make. Well, I have a lot of confessions I should probably make…like the fact that sometimes I make cookies solely to eat all the dough left in the bowl.
That’s pretty normal though, right?
I should also confess that in three days I had Starbucks three times. Once before The Color Run, then on my way to Omaha from Des Moines, then on my six hour drive back to the twin cities on Monday. I might have a problem.
I should probably also confess my growing hatred for dishes…
Here’s the real confession though: it’s been a whole week since last week’s post sharing my new plans for holding off on school for now and finding a job here in the twin cities. I have yet to apply for a single job.
I can’t quite put my finger on it.
It’s not that I don’t want a job. Honestly I’m kind of done with having to do all the “housework” since that was the agreement (me not having a job = I need to pull my weight–totally logical) and I might start resorting to drastic measures if I continue to have to do the majority of the dishes.
It’s not that I think I won’t get hired. Although I haven’t had a real job in awhile (mostly babysitting, waitressing and barista-ing), I am pretty good at interviews.
I’m one of those people that will research the company and prep myself with practice questions. I also learned awhile back to dress a little nicer than I will need to for the actual position during an interview. Really it might just be that I have a trusting face or something, but I’ve gotten every position I’ve interviewed for. So it’s not fear holding me back.
It’s not even lack of looking for jobs. I’ve been to numerous sites and spent hours browsing and searching and have even bookmarked a few positions. I’ve asked friend’s opinions who work for certain companies whether they like their job or not. Every day I brainstorm what kind of a job I really want.
I think it comes down to two things:
1. I am an expert procrastinator.
But one of those very productive procrastinators.
I was out of town all weekend for The Color Run so I was busy hanging out with friends,
(Confession: although there were a lot of “healthy” options at La Mie Bakery in Des Moines, I might have picked the most decadent and caloric thing on the menu. Hey I just walked 3 miles…)
(Confession: I bring my own snacks when staying at someone else’s house because I get embarrassed at how often I like to eat and at my need for a bedtime snack. I also didn’t want to impose on the sweet Alex who let me crash at her place.)
driving a total of 12 hours (Confession: I stop at least every two hours on a drive by myself),
(Confession: I spent half of the drive listening to Disney songs on Pandora) |
and spending time with family.
Good golly I did not want to leave them!
(Confession: I wanted to poke him when he was sleeping so I could play with him.) |
I also let my daily life (such as laundry, dishes, cooking, blogging, instagramming) get in the way of sitting down and just applying for a job.
Yesterday my goal was to apply to one job. Just one I told myself.
But I was on my feet 10 hours doing odds and ends around here. I had unpacking, bed-making, budgeting, cleaning up from the weekend since I wasn’t here (I do love Dave and he did try to keep things in order but Lord knows that’s not his strong suite), laundry, making food,

making a skillet cookie to butter up Dave so I could sign up for another race (eek I think I’m signing up for a half today!!), and before I knew it…it was 11pm. Dangit.
2. I am a perfectionist who has unrealistic expectations.
I want to find the perfect job.
I want a job that will give me experience in the health and wellness industry.
I want a job with flexible hours.
I want a job where I don’t have to work nights and weekends.
I want a job that pays well and has good benefits.
A little unrealistic, right? Especially without a degree or certification.
Well, in the spirit of getting things done and not procrastinating the job hunt further…I will be holding off sharing the deliciocity that is the skillet cookie.
In the meantime…I think someone has to confess to ruining the beauty of my skillet cookie before I could take pictures of it…
[UPDATE: Skillet cookie recipe here!]
Happy Wednesday all and again, wish me luck on actually APPLYING for jobs! 🙂

Do you have any confessions to make today?
Any tips on job hunting/applying/interviewing?

oh hey, that french toast was healthy in some way shape or form. it had several food groups. the bread was homemade (though it could have been whole grain, and then my comment would be more valid). you didn’t slather it with maple syrup (why would you?!) and you didn’t eat all (or much) of it. So I’d say it was just as healthy as anything else you could have gotten (save for a salad).
sorry. i’m on a mission to hopefully stop negative comments about food choices being “unhealthy”. if you ate that all the time, yeah it’d be unhealthy. But I’m pretty sure these are things you know considering you’re studying nutrition and all. it’s all in moderation. besides, when’s the last time you had a PB, banana, and bacon sandwich on white bread? :p

haha do you really think I would have ordered it if I felt guilty about eating it?? I just thought it would be a funny “confession.” I even put healthy in quotes and never called the french toast unhealthy. 😉
It was an amazing couple of meals (I ate the rest the next day) and I do not regret ordering it! 🙂 but I know you commented out of love so I appreciate it!!

1. I love your new site design. I’ve been so incredibly busy lately (like working 12 hours a day) that I haven’t had much time for blog reading. I feel so behind!
2. Let’s just face it: looking for a new job blows. Big time. Update Resume. Update cover letter. And then after submitting those, they still want you to fill out their ridiculously cumbersome online application. Sigh. It’s a full time job looking for a job.
I’m sure you’ll find something great! In the meantime, enjoy your clean house, laundry and made bed 🙂
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
Thanks Maria for the blog love and sympathy! I don’t know why I thought finding something would be easy…I still have yet to apply to a job and I’m not writing another post until I do! It’s possible that I’m being too picky though…at the end of the month I’m just going to take whatever job I can get!
And I definitely am loving how clean the apartment is looking…aside from the couple of boxes Dave has yet to unpack (ones that I didn’t know what to do with…I unpacked all of his other ones haha). 🙂

Starbucks iced coffees are my obsession too these days… As for the job, you will find the perfect one! You’re not procrastinating…you just haven’t found the right opportunity for you!! Cheers! Tara

I’m new to your blog and I’m liking you and your confession alreadys 🙂 I have the same problem with looking for a job (including the procrastination) because being a perfectionist means I sort through all the jobs first, and then keep looking for more in case I missed the perfect one. My top tip would be to find any way you can to make that first application (to a job you don’t care about, with a rubbish application) and then it only gets easier when you’ve got the ball rolling.
So glad to hear someone else takes snacks when they’re a guest in someone’s house! I always, always have a pack of almonds with me for late night snacking and protein top ups.
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
Welcome to the blog! 🙂
Yes I think the hardest part was the first one. I applied to three on Friday so I’m pretty happy about that!
And I love that you carry snacks with you too! I dislike being hungry and I also dislike asking people to provide snacks when I’m already crashing at their place haha

As a fellow expert procrastinator, I can TOTALLY understand all of this, but sometimes, you just have to bite the bullet (or kick yourself in the ass), close your eyes, and just JUMP! Try not to set the bar too high. Just remember, you’re just starting out and there is always time to move on to bigger and better things, but having an actual job to fill in the space on your resume looks a heck of a lot better than gaps that you can’t really justify…not that spending time with family, friends, and eating that fan-freaking-tastic French toast aren’t all good reasons, but for some reason, I don’t think your future employer would agree! 😉
PS, I totally take snacks to the man-friend’s house every weekend that I visit for the exact same reason!
PPS, OMG THAT COOOOOOOOKIE!!! 😯
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
Oh absolutely! I wrote this post so I would have some kind of accountability…I didn’t post again until I had applied to 3 jobs! The first one is always the hardest for some reason! And thankfully I have been babysitting occasionally and was just in school so that’s SOMETHING for a gap in employment. 🙂
Snacks for the win! And I will be sharing that cookie hopefully tomorrow!!
