Diary of a Semi-Health Nut

ramblings + recipes of a semi-healthy nut

Hi! I’m Amanda.

SHN Favorites 5-10-13

May 10, 2013 by Amanda R DeWitt

 Happy Friday Friends!

I failed to mention this in my half-marathon race recap post yesterday, but I made it to the great state of Minnesota!  I road-tripped it all the way up from Nebraska!

I got to stop and hang out with my blend Calee in Ames on the way up where she treated me to some coffee-pressed coffee that I drank on the remaining three hour trip up to the twin cities.  I’m so glad I got to break up the 6 hour road-trip AND that I got some caffeine since my poor timing landed me at Dave’s hotel around midnight.  I need to remember that I take more bathroom breaks than the average person. (Poor Dave…he has to get up at 5am and I woke him up.)

Dave and I also got to hang out with Lee and her boy last night at the Lyndale Taphouse in uptown (like I really know what “uptown means” haha).  I really REALLY hope Dave gets the job here because if you can believe it, Lee is even sweeter in person than on her blog and it would be awesome if we could hang out more often!

Currently I am holed up in the hotel battling some allergy symptoms (that I will later try to fix with exercise…does that work?  Endorphins or something?), and I thought I’d share some of my favorites from the past few weeks!

(Check out other SHN Favorites here.)

Favorite Foodie Posts:
18 Microwave Snacks You Can Cook in a Mug
A couple of these items include:
Chocolate Chip Cookie in a Cup by No. 2 Pencil

2 Minute Chocolate Salted Caramel Mug Cake from Babble

Current Favorite Blogs:
M. Falls
It’s funny because this blog isn’t really about anything in particular, just my blend Maria’s life and thoughts, but every time I read it, I either learn something new or end up giggling about something she writes.
Breakfast To Bed
While I don’t understand all of her references (which both reminds me of Gilmore Girls and makes me feel smarter just by reading her posts), I cannot help but read every word of her posts.  Her snarky, descriptive writing just draws me in and her yummy recipes don’t hurt either.
Favorite Inspirational Post:
A Letter of Intent by Sarah at The Smart Kitchen
I love the passion she has for nutrition and public health!  She is taking a daring leap and I’m so excited to talk to her in person about her plans!
Favorite Growing Up Post:
Life in Your Early Twenties vs Your Late Twenties from The Thought Catalog
I just crossed the line from early to late twenties, so I can definitely relate to some of these.
Favorite Body Image Posts:
Real Beauty Sketches from Dove
Be aware…I cried when I watched this video!  Women described their appearance to someone who could not see them who sketched a picture of them, then a stranger who just met the woman described the same woman to the same artist and the sketched pictures were remarkably different.
Intuitive Eating- Not What I Thought by Calee at Life + Running
I really like her approach to the “intuitive eating” program.  I disagree with some of the basics of this plan, such as the thought process that you will “crave” what your body needs (false.  your body will crave calories and/or food you like), but Calee takes that into account and is getting more comfortable with different foods that she once banned from her diet.
Moving Forward by Going Back by Heather at Kiss My Broccoli
Heather’s journey to find herself started with food!  Another “intuitive eating” success story.
Other Favorites:
Things You Should Stop Saying to Introverts from The Thought Catalog
I liked this because I can relate to the awkwardness that comes along with just being naturally quiet.  It’s not that I have nothing at all to say or that I’m mad…I’m just more of a listener and a thinker.  Sometimes by the time I actually have something to say (especially in a group), there’s no opening for me to talk.  The real awkwardness comes in when an extreme extrovert exclaims, “Why are you so QUIET!?”  Really, this does not make me want to talk more…it just makes me uncomfortable and put on the spot (where I despise being!)
3 Things I Wish I Knew Before We Got Married
No, I’m not married, and no firm plans as of yet, but I like to plan ahead and this article seemed very genuine and it’s actually written by a man, which I feel is a little more rare.
Well, that’s all for now!  If you were featured in this post, please grab a button and spread the share love!  (Because I worked very hard on them!)

Diary of a Semi-Health Nut
Wish Dave and I luck exploring the twin cities and hopefully I will be back later to share that decadent brownie recipe…I may or may not be eating some right now….on top of cereal…don’t judge!

What are you up to this weekend?

Have you ever been to the twin cities?  What should we explore while we are here?

I am staying in this weekend but I love the twin cities!! My sister lives up there and it is my #1 fave place to visit. Obviously Mall of America is pretty cool but I’ve actually only been there once as there is so much other stuff we have done. There is a casino that does blacklight bingo – that was pretty fun and another time we spent the day at the zoo. Aaah have fun!

Thank you again for the shout out. I find it funny that my blog really isn’t about anything, but that’s why you like it 🙂

Also, thanks for linking to some interesting intuitive eating posts. I’d love to get your prospective as a nutrition student on it. Have you done a post your thoughts on intuitive eating?

I need to do a post on it for sure…but I think I should read the book again. Sometimes I stray away from doing posts when everyone else is talking about the same thing because I don’t want to be a copy-cat, but I just need to get over that and just write about what I want to!

PS Grab a pretty button! 🙂

Aww, thanks for the shout out girlie!! I’ll have to check out some of those posts for sure! The microwave one reminded me of Kammie’s double chocolate mugcake…have you seen it? It looks ahhhhhmazing! http://www.sensualappealblog.com/double-chocolate-microwave-mug-cake/ And she made the funniest little video to go with it!

Oh and for the record, I balled my eyes out over that Dove ad…so moving!

Hope you get to feeling better! Allergies are no fun! I never really know what the best way is to get over them either…I mean, it’s not like you can really sweat it out, but maybe the endorphin release will help you forget you can’t breathe? 😉

      No problem friend!

haha I actually think it had to do with being in the hotel room for two days with the dry dusty air or something. I felt much better over the weekend getting out. But yeah when medicine doesn’t work…it’s kind of like you just have to be miserable awhile.
