{WIAW #55} Show Me Your Snow Dance!!

February 20, 2013 by Amanda R DeWitt

Hey friends!

The big snow is coming through Nebraska this week.  And I desperately hope it is enough to push my third test for the week off…and of course it’s the Chemistry test.

I also have a post for Thursday Thoughts that I’ve been wanting to write for weeks, but it requires attention and care.

So let’s cross our fingers and do our best snow dances ever!!

I am taking a brief moment off from studying about types of sugars, pectins and chloroplasts to look back on my nice weekend with Dave (the BF).

That guy, who doesn’t like pictures taken of him so I am using one from Christmas. 😉

After my last class ended Friday around 2:15pm, I rushed home to finish packing for my trip to the middle of Nebraska, small town, USA.  I had a three and a half hour drive ahead of me so I wanted to leave as early as possible.

Which of course meant that I left two hours later.

On the way I actually had to pick up Dave’s Valentine’s present.  I never know what to get him…he’s trying to lose weight (or at least maintain weight while living in a hotel the last year), so I didn’t want to bake him something to dissuade him from his hard work.  I knew I would get him a card…but what else??
I remembered him telling me he was going to try to bring a lunch from “home,” which consisted of things that could be eaten cold or nuked since the poor guy only has a mini fridge and microwave for a kitchen.  I mean it’s nice for a hotel room, but it’s pretty challenging to make healthy choices when there’s no way to cook a real meal.  Not to mention the fact that most of the guys he works with eat fast food for lunch and restaurant meals at night.  Yikes!

To help him out, I spotted a neat set of containers to pack lunches in.  They all snap together and even come with a thing to stick in the freezer to keep everything cold and fresh.  Yes, he does have a freezer.  It is about the size of an icecube tray.

Well, it turns out, he already had the EXACT set I bought.  Oh well, at least he won’t have to wash it every day?

I also got him some microwaveable Campbells soups and a random thing of spicy mustard…for his lunchmeat sandwiches.  I also packed something of an inside joke…which he didn’t find until later in the Merry Valentine’s bag that his presents came in….clearly “wrapped” in the car…

I gave him these cute salt and pepper shakers that we might have taken from a hotel.  I kept them and every time he saw them at my dad’s house he would tell me I was terrible for stealing them.  Because they were his.

What did Dave get me?  Well, not a ring.  And even though he told me it wasn’t a ring, my heart pounded fiercely as I opened up a very ring-like box.  Seriously dude, you can’t keep doing this.

I found a very pretty pair of earrings in the ring-like box, and then he brought out the matching necklace.  The blue “brings out my eyes,” or something equally as cheesy and romantic as that. (picture later?)

Saturday we woke up late, well late for us is around 8am these days.  Are we getting old?  The eggs on the breakfast bar were omelets filled with cheddar cheese, so after whining a bit (I wanted eggs!), I went for the french toast with peanut butter.

After watching this new show King of the Nerds and some other crazy documentary about a guy who traveled through the Amazon to find coffee beans, we decided it was time to get to work.  He was on weekend duty and I had three tests to study for.

I rearranged the desk and dining table for optimal study space and so that I could watch The Lorax (twice in a row) while making about a hundred notecards and filling out study guides.  Little did I know that Pursuit of Happyness would be on tv and I’d have to watch that while trying not to cry on my flashcards.  Such an inspirational movie!  The last scene where he get’s the job….waterworks!

I refueled with some…Doritos??  I hadn’t had them in years and decided to pair them with one of the soups Dave deemed “too healthy.”  I also busted out one of the cutest little Diet Dews I’ve ever seen!  Little 12oz servings that fit perfectly into the mini-fridge!

We got to have dinner that evening with one of Dave’s former training classmates in the program he is in at work.  We went to the fancy restaurant in town…which was, well, not so fancy by city folk standards.  The waitress clearly had too many tables, spilled Diet Coke on me, and all around didn’t seem to have time for our table.

I loved the idea of the chicken sandwich I got, with avocados and bacon, and it was good for the most part, but I could not bite into the darned thing without everything flying out the back!  I did enjoy my broccoli…aside from the brown one.

I’m not sure if it’s my food science class (where we learn about horrifying things that can go wrong in the kitchen) or the fact that I just like to have fresh food, or that this was a small town… but I really seem to notice the quality of foods lately.

I was at a sandwich place the next day and I kid you not, the lettuce was BROWN.  I told the girls that the lettuce looked funny and they looked at me with blank eyes, snickering like I’d made a joke.  It was no wonder that the sandwich made my stomach hurt…

Oh and did I mention the fact that despite deciding not to bring baked treats to Dave…he decided to buy TWELVE boxes of Girl Scout cookies?  He was doing it out of kindness toward the cleaning lady, who has become like family to him, and the fact that these lovely cookies only come around once a year…I guess.

*sigh*

They did make some delightful dessert dipped in applesauce!  Seriously, you gotta try this!

I was sad to leave my best friend, but I did get to see another lovely Nebraska sunset while driving.

The four hours went by fairly quickly as I was singing to my new iPod tunes and practicing answers to interview questions (thanks Maria!).

(I’ve been in my new city almost a month and the babysitting scene doesn’t seem to be as hoppin’ as it was in my home town.  I should have planned ahead, but seriously I got five messages the month I was leaving and once I changed my city on the babysitting site, nada.  I mean I have some things in the works, but the savings (slash student loan money) isn’t going to last forever!)

Well, it’s time to munch on my kettle corn and string cheese and finish up my laundry.  Yes, I decided to do laundry tonight…even though we might be snowed in on Thursday?  Come on Amanda!

Happy Wednesday!
*~Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut~*

Do you enjoy driving by yourself?  What has been your longest road-trip?

Are you a picky eater?  I don’t think I am, but I won’t eat BROWN lettuce.  Or things that I know will upset my stomach.

    1. Brandon always started off our gift giving (pre-engagement) with “It’s a not ring!”. Oh boys!
    2. I had Doritos too yesterday with my Subway sandwich. They were calling to me. Also, every time I get Subway I think of you.
    3. Practicing interview questions is so helpful. Talk out your answers out loud and come up with concrete examples. Also, I babysat in college for one of my professors – its the best because once you put the kids to bed, it’s time to watch Disney movies, err, I mean study. 🙂

I like how you listed out your points. That’s actually one thing I like about your blog posts too. 😉 Nothin wrong with a bag of Doritos every once in awhile! 🙂

DORITOS!!! Oh my goodness. I can’t even remember the last time I had those. And Diet Mountain Dew, too? That’s living. 🙂

I have been blessed with having so many fabulous meals ‘out’ that I can be pretty ‘judgy’ when I go to other restaurants. However, I tend to make my own meals at places most of the time, adding or taking things away, and sometimes I get really lucky. 🙂

Those Doritos hit the spot! It’s funny when you come back to something like that…I mean I lived off of Cool Ranch Doritos all through Junior High and probably High School!

Also I’m glad I’m not the only “judgy” one. Seriously, no brown vegetables should be served!!
