Hello Friends!
I’m not gonna lie…many times I have planned on going to the gym but ended up “not having enough time,” or didn’t feel like getting all of my things together and making the 10 minute trip to the gym.
But now…I kind of have no excuse. Sure, I’m busy, but I have at least a couple of treadmills and some free weights less than half a mile away from me.
Awkward head tilt anyone? |
I’ve made a couple trips to the apartment gym now, always walking there, so bonus half mile walk. I do like the fact that sometimes I get there and there’s no one else there.
Monday’s treadmill time..before I stopped it at 3 miles. 😉 |
Last night was quite the exception when I decided to work out some aggression with the weight machines after my awful (AWFUL) Chemistry test.
I have been going to extra Chemistry classes, attending the “good teacher’s” class twice a week in addition to my scheduled class (to get those participation points). I went to two review sessions this week starting at 8pm and ending around 10pm. I have reviewed my notes and felt pretty darned comfortable going into the test last night. Then BAM. It was like I was slapped in the face when I could barely answer the first question. It was like what we learned, but taken five steps further.
Like I told my friend as we were commiserating about our definite failing grades, I might have been able to do better if I had about 8 hours to take the test with a break to clear my head….but we “only” had an hour and a half. So frustrating that Chemistry takes up all my time and then I get to the test and it doesn’t even make sense. Apparently the test average for this test last semester was 55%. And the Chemistry department does NOT curve grades at all. Good night!
Chemistry cat. How adorable? |
Anyways, I went to the gym and did some weights and was feeling pretty good. I thought I might amp it up a bit and do my scheduled run. I’ve been slacking a little and trying to get into the routine so I can run my first half-marathon in May. I hopped on the treadmill right in front of the tv, Transporter was on and I was feeling pretty darn awesome that I was running without a break for two miles.
Yep. Pop machine at the gym. Classy. |
Then all of these girls started filing in the small-ish apartment gym. You know one of those gyms that’s all one room with mirrors for walls to make it feel bigger. All the girls seemed to know each other but I thought it was particularly odd that no one seemed to be moving towards any of the workout equipment. What the heck is going on at 9pm at an apartment gym??
Then a guy strolled in with an ipad and got on the treadmill next to me and started walking at what can only be called a snail’s pace. Then an old guy (70 years old?) came in and got on the severely outdated bike that is in a super weird place…right on the wooden floor that reminds me of a ballet studio. I think it’s the only piece of equipment on that floor aside from a small group of free weights. So so weird to see an older person at the gym at 9pm, right??
It all came together when a girl walked in with a boombox.
As the girls started to get their zumba/dance/hiphop groove on, I felt insanely awkward that I was only feet from what I now realize is the class floor. I remembered seeing something on the bulletin board about gym classes, but I could have sworn they said 8 and 9am…because who would have a class at 9pm at night?
I felt super uncomfortable. I mean, I have taken classes at the gym that are far away from others working out, but there’s this one spot by the doors that people can see in and I ALWAYS try to avoid it because I don’t want people watching me. And here I was…basically in their class…trying hard not to watch all the women shimmy and wiggle.
Well, it became painfully obvious that the two gentlemen that came in were there to watch the dance show. Seriously, creepalicious. I finished my 3 miles as quickly as possible and proceeded to walk through their class as they were booty popping to the only exit available. So awkward!
Don’t get me wrong, the class seemed fun and in a different environment (no creepers) and with adequate notification that there would in fact be a class going on at a certain time…I’d probably invite my roomie to dance off some steam.
This tweet pretty much summed up my feelings from the experience.
But I’m so glad I did get my 3 miles in! It gives me hope that I will continue to get my workouts done…even late at night if necessary.
I have also been trying to do core work each time I run since it seems to help with the stitches I get in my side. Warming up really well and starting slow helps with that too!
I am almost positive that I will be heading back to that gym (or campus gym) for some cross training, stress-burning activity since I did find out my test score today. I’m not one of those people that tries to pretend I did bad when I really didn’t. It was the worst test score of my life. Apparently one person scored 5 on it. Like 5% out of 100%. I really need to reevaluate where I spend my time and how hard I really am studying for all of my classes. Oh, and find a job? Life is rough, I tell ya!
But hooray for the weekend! Hooray for seeing my amazing BF Dave for the first time in two weeks! And going home to see my family and hang out with friends!

Let’s make this a good weekend and I will get back at ya next week with my theme Love Yourself February.
I’m bringing this challenge back because it’s something we all need to focus on and why not now? February. The month of love. (And heart health awareness. Health nerd here.)

Girl, I’m sorry about the Chem test! I’m sending you so many virtual hugs; I hope the semester gets better for you asap!
As for that class in the middle of the gym…awkward. It seems like they should either have the gym be for “class only” during those times or have it in a different space….I mean, right?!
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
EXACTLY about the gym class haha! And I would totally go but obviously there are creepers!!

Aaah I’m so self conscious at the gym too, mostly like I am paranoid of doing something wrong like flying off the treadmill and everyone watching, lol. I don’t know why someone in the glass wouldn’t tell the guys to get moving or GTFO… I would! When I had my first gym membership at Ballys I would go sometimes with 2 friends and when we went into the weight sections there were always guys that seemed to live in the gym and always had comments to make… like “don’t work out too hard you will bulk up har har”… I mean really at 18 years old I knew that wasn’t true and it annoyed me so much.
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
haha yes or at Body Pump we do squats so if you were in the door with the window…your butt was in the window lol!
I usually try to wear headphones but sometimes that doesn’t work with some dudes.

I used to go to a super cheap gym and it was the same way there. The treadmills and bikes looked into the workout room (had windows) and girls would be in there doing yoga (not being sexist, but there were more girls than guys) and there are the men lined up 🙂
I changed gyms and now its just me a bunch of old people. I like them. Except when they fly off the treadmill and about give me a heart attack.
Warm weather can’t come soon enough so you can run outside, right?
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
Omg I almost busted out laughing here in class (statistics…no I’m not slacking in chemistry lol) about the people falling off the treadmill! Not that I would laugh if it actually happened…because that is mean…

Oh wow! I was like, what the heck? All those people showing up at 9 at night…then the whole creeper picture was painted…eww! That IS awfully late for a class though! So weird!
So sorry to hear about the Chem test. Chemistry was one of the hardest subjects for me to get my head around in school so I can totally feel your pain…I think I handled PHYSICS better and that surprises me to no end! At least you were able to work off some steam though…nothing better than a good burst of endorphins to help clear your head! Hope you’re having a great weekend girlie!!

I did have a great weekend to unwind and destress! It was perfect! 🙂
Boo for creepers haha

At least you had what I hope was a wonderful weekend to destress from that horrific chemistry experience. I didn’t take any ‘lab’ science classes in college but I definitely heard the horror stories. I think what you are doing is best: accept, reevaluate, and move on.
As for the creeper gym story. Um. WHAT?!!? I get working out late at night, sure, but I would be so hesitant to go to that class if I knew there would be old men just creepin’ on us. I find it awkward even if someone comes up and talks to me at all in the gym, let alone stares at me…
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
Yes. Chem class=one giant horror story haha!
I just know now NOT to take that class and try to have my workouts done before 9pm!

Lol, I don’t even know what I would have done if that happened while I was in their! Awkward!!
Sorry about Chemistry. Take design classes. They’re fun! Haha.
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
Big old bowl of awkward!!
Amanda aka Semi-Health Nut
And I would LOVE to take a design class!! Wish I had extra credits I needed!
