The Color Run Rant

July 16, 2012 by Amanda R DeWitt

Hello Friends!

Okay you know how you get super excited about something and the closer it comes the more excited you get and the anticipation grows and grows and well, it’s not all that you had hoped for?

This is how the Color Run was for me.  So many amazingly cool pictures on the Color Run website and everyone was having the time of their lives….. and then I wake up late.  Or should I say…for some reason I kept hitting and hitting and hitting the snooze button.

Not at all like the website pictures…

Since I was late, the ladies I was going to run with had already lined up…and I had to go alone.  Not as fun as acting crazy with a group of friends.

Bad news–it wasn’t all I had dreamed, or a blast like my Facebook friends said.

The good news–now I have some tips that could make it pure awesomeness for next year!

1.  Plan ahead.  Make sure you know where you’re going and where you’re meeting your people.
2.  Pick up your packet before the actual race day.  This is a busy busy busy event.  In the small city of Omaha, Nebraska, there were 13,000 participants!!
3.  Run with a group.  This is probably one of the main reasons I didn’t have the greatest time…it’s not as fun to be a goofball by yourself!

3.  Get there early.  Again, lots of people.  The race started at 10am on a day where the high was 95 degrees…so the earlier, the cooler it is.  We also had to park about a mile away (which meant I got an extra 2 miles in…gotta be positive right!?) so the earlier the better.
4.  Bring your own hydration.  The first water station I went to was after one mile in blazing heat and I could not find the water.  And I wasn’t the only one!  We saw paper cups everywhere…but no water!  Terribleness!
5.  The most important tip: This isn’t really a run.  There were many times that I had to stop dead because people in front of me stopped to take pictures or groups of people were walking and blocking the entire road.  Should be called a fun run-walk-stop. 😉

Even if you have a terrible run, and yes, by the end of the steamy run where I couldn’t really run and I was running alone when everyone else was having a blast with friends, I was a bit peeved, maybe you have a supportive BF to drive you to Sonic to get a breakfast burrito and ginormous powerade slushie.  (Yep, longest sentence ever.)

I didn’t even get a lot of color on me…but that’s okay.  Next time I will get completely stained with my new plan on having a great Color Run (slash walk and stop).

And Dave (the BF) decided to wear jeans and a long sleeve button up to watch me run the Color Run.  The messiest and hottest run ever.  Needless to say, he got some color on his button up, which I sorta feel bad about but I really don’t get dudes and their fashion decisions.  (Come on 95 degrees out!!  And watching a Color Run!!)

I am still VERY VERY grateful Dave came to watch me.  And dealt with the crabby post-bad-run Amanda. 🙂

Also, I’m not opposed to going next year, this is not a “I hate the Color Run” rant, but an “I didn’t expect it to go like this and was a wee bit disappointed” rant.

Still had my crabby face on…

Let’s sum up the positive points of this “run” day so I feel better about this sorta bitter post:

  • I got a good workout in.  3 mile run/walk and 2 mile walk (to and from the car)
  • Dave was an awesome supporter.
  • I got some cool pictures.
  • I was so delirious from the heat that I giggled the whole way home about the most random things.
  • I got some delicious food and slushie after the run.  Thanks Dave. 🙂
  • I have legs to run and walk so I was able to participate in this run.  THANK YOU GOD! 🙂

Also–my runs this week are going to be waaayyy better than the one on Saturday. 😉
