The Marathon is sold out what??

March 7, 2011 by Amanda R DeWitt

Hey folks,

I was going to do a half-marathon May 1st.  I saw about a month and a half ago that the half-marathon was sold out and when I discussed this with my BF, he said we could still sign up for the full-marathon but just run the half.  THEN a week or so later, I realized the entire run was sold out!!  I had no idea this was such a big deal!  I mean I guess I knew that registration started in December…but I did not realize that there were so many die-hard runners in my area!  Next year: no procrastination!

So I searched and found another big-ish race May 15th as well as a bigger race September 25th.  I decided to modify my running goals to run the 10K on May 15th and the half-marathon September 25th…this way I will have more time to train outdoors because the weather here is STILL FREEZING!

I haven’t changed my schedule of running, however.  I am still trying to stick to my original plan, hoping that it will allow me a more competitive time at the 10K as well as the half-marathon.  This may be unrealistic, however, as I checked the winning woman’s pace in the big-ish run and it was at a 6.5 minute/mile pace.  My goal is 10m/m.  We will see….

Stats since I last blogged:

Saturday, February 26th

4 miles in 39 minutes
Total miles: 6 miles in 75 minutes
Monday, February 28th
4 miles in 38 minutes
Total miles: 5 miles in 55 minutes

Saturday, March 5th
5 miles in 54 minutes
Total miles: 6 miles in 70 minutes

I think these are pretty good stats if I do say so myself!  After not running for a week I was pretty nervous to run again.  But I have still made improvement.  I’m also surprised I did so well because this past week the BF got sick, so I didn’t have my usual running buddy.  🙁
A running buddy would have come in handy when I completed my first 4 mile run.  It was pretty awkward high-fiving myself…just kidding but I was sad there was no one to high-five!  I actually looked around for a minute to see if I could tell someone but people pretty much stick to themselves with their ipods blasting at the gym.

I guess I could’ve high-fived a cat? Photo Credit

Saturday’s run was a bit more challenging than usual because I may have made the mistake to watch a couple of YouTube videos on correct running form, warm-ups, etc.
Okay, I understand that it is important to run correctly, but I seriously could not figure out how to keep my body from twisting and it was exhausting!  Apparently NOTHING is supposed to twist, but I feel my hips, shoulders, AND arms twisting when I run.
Another tip I picked up on the handy-dandy YouTube site was that instead of normal stretching that I am used to called “static” stretching (where you hold the stretch for 30 seconds or more), before running, I am supposed to do “dynamic” stretching.   The dynamic stretches are movements that get your body warmed up and the running muscles engaged instead of completely stretched out.  This is all good in theory, but I feel like this wore me out a bit before running.  An example of the warm-up would be walking lunges, high-knee jogging, etc.  One running coach even suggested a 15-20 minute jog to warm up!  I really don’t understand why you would exert yourself THAT much to warm-up…

Well, I am going for another run today so wish me luck!  AND I’m going with my high-fiving running buddy so I won’t get to look awesome like our Liz Lemon here…30 Rock anyone?
You can Internet-five me by commenting on my blog…just saying.  🙂
Happy running!
Also, I’m trying this new thing called photo credit…where I give credit to those who took the pictures on my blog…but not going so well because it turns out a lot of people steal pictures and put them on their sites…but I’m trying!
