Hey friends! Today, I want to take this opportunity to tell you how awesome Dave (aka Dave Cakes) is. I know I’ve shared it before in bits and pieces, but he really deserves his own post.
Dave is a Hard Worker
Has anyone watched Breaking Bad? I watched it when it came out on Netflix (last year?) and begged Dave to watch it with me because it was SO GOOD, but he was overworked and tired and not able to focus on something new. Even a new tv show. (how sad is that??)
He was working hard to provide for our little family’s future (our little family = me + Dave), and unfortunately he had no actual life in the process. He was told that if he just put in his time, it would all work out in the end. He was told he would basically be able to choose his position back at headquarters (in Omaha, Nebraska where we are from).
He worked. so. hard.
Like 80 hours per week. Like he had a work phone attached to him and would get calls at all hours of the night. More than once he worked 36 hours straight and still had to get his work done the next day. I don’t think Dave ever really made friends the entire two years we were in Minnesota outside of work because that’s pretty much all he did.
He worked holidays and wouldn’t be able to go home to see his family. Two Christmases in a row he had to stay in Minnesota all by himself.
Despite how hard he was working, he also found time to help around the apartment, listen to me complain about work, play with our fluffy kitten Zoey, and make an attempt to have a date night every once and awhile.
I don’t think I told him nearly enough how grateful I was that he was working so hard. I had my own stuff going on and I was working hard as well. I think I was too resentful of the job that kept Dave away from me. I always felt like we were in the twin cities, but we never really lived there. I wanted to do fun stuff with him, but he was always (understandably) tired.
(These adorable Reese’s cups are exclusive at Walmart!)
And Dave, being the person he is, stayed remarkably positive throughout the whole thing. Not a lot of people make it through the engineering program he was in and there is a reason for that—it’s ridiculously, brutally tough.
After two years of living in hotels, then two years of living in Minnesota working 60-80 hours a week, he was forced to make a tough decision. He put in his blood, sweat and tears (quite literally), and decided to quit the railroad with a bit of a heavy heart.
I Have My Partner in Crime Back #shareyoursummer
But the good thing? I now have my partner in crime back!
After catching up on his sleep (for like two or three weeks), we were able to do some exploring in Minnesota, he finally proposed (because, you know, his brain was working again) and we moved back to Nebraska to be closer to our families.
He’s also been helping me out a ton on blog stuff. I can bounce ideas off of him, he helps pick stuff up for recipes (we recently had a super fun baking day together…get excited for some new sugary recipes!), helps with photography (he may know more about my camera now than I do), and has even taken a few (awkward) photos of me I can use for professional-ish blog things!
A couple of weeks back, he told me he was ready to start watching Breaking Bad and I got overly excited about it. To me, that was a signal that things are getting back to normal. Well, normal for Dave basically being on summer vacation. (It’s okay guys, he is job hunting, too.)
For those of you who don’t know, Breaking Bad is an intense action/drama about a school teacher who finds out he has cancer and in a desperate attempt to pay for his treatment and make sure his family is provided for in the future, decides to get into the meth business. Thus why “partner in crime” would be on my mind right now.
I’ve been re-watching episodes with him, chatting about theories and/or pointing out weird details the other might have missed, and I’ve even taken to listening to a podcast about the series called Breaking Good. Seriously, I am so excited Dave is watching the show!!
Dave Deserves a Summer Vacation, and a Treat!
While I have been a little uneasy at times about how he hasn’t found the right job yet, I do realize how much he needed this break. Or this summer vacation, if you will.
He’s been using his summer vacation wisely, too (aside from watching Breaking Bad..which is clearly the absolute most important thing he could be doing).
He has been doing one of his favorite things ever—trap shooting (or what I call: shooting flying orange discs). He’s pretty good, too. He even won this big, fancy, sparkly award last week.
Not only does he deserve this summer vacation, my partner in crime also deserves to know how much I appreciate him.
I found this personalized Coca-Cola bottle with the name “David” on it (Coke actually has 1000 names for their personalized bottles now!) and these cute custom Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups with “my fave” on them at Walmart at the end of a check-out line. Walmart has the widest and most organized selection of Coca-Cola personalized 20 oz bottles, so it’s the place to go.
I thought they were fitting to give to him as a thanks for all of his hard work over the last 4 years. And maybe as a bit of an “I’m sorry for being so impatient” as well.
I mean he deserves more than candy and pop (yes, we call it pop in Nebraska), but hopefully all of this gets the point across.
So here’s to you, Dave. I’m so happy to call you my partner in crime (soon it will be official. Mr and Mrs Partners in Crime.) and so grateful for all you do.
Thanks Collective Bias, Inc for sponsoring this fun treat!
