Time for S’mores!
So what do you think of when you think s’mores? Probably roasting marshmallows around a campfire and then sticking said marshmallows in between graham cracker squares and some chocolate, right? Well…it turns out, there is more than one way to make s’mores!
Last summer I did a post entitled S’mores 3 Ways which included a s’mores cookie bar, s’mores in a croissant and one of my popular desserts S’mores Cookie Dough Pie. That’s right, friends. Things get creative around here when it comes to desserts!
What I wanted for this post was a semi-healthy s’mores dessert. This is, after all, a semi-healthy blog.
S’mores Banana Boats on a Grill
I remember seeing an episode from Pioneer Woman where she was bringing all kinds of goodies to a campfire. One of these goodies included little s’mores banana boats. She added a lot of crazy ingredients, but we kept ours pretty simple with the basic chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers. I even found all of this in one place at Walmart.
So I decided to try the s’mores banana boats on a grill, since I don’t have easy access to a campfire right now. (I mean, I’m not above microwaving s’mores, so I thought nothing of using a grill!)

Dave’s parents graciously let us use their grill when we were having dinner together in Omaha on Tuesday (and we repaid them by making them their own s’mores banana boats). You don’t have to wait till the weekend to make s’mores, right??
[ Zoey agrees. ]
[ So does Dave’s parents’ cat Wallace. ]
And it worked like a freaking charm.
Even Dave’s mom, who was a bit apprehensive of the idea (calling it “weird” multiple times), gave them a thumbs up. One of my favorite things is proving people wrong with my semi-healthy twists, so this made me super happy. (<-does that make me sound awful for wanting to prove people wrong? I think it’s part of my competitive nature shining through AND the fact that I want people to see that desserts don’t have to have gobs of sugar to be satisfying. not all the time at least.)
This ooey gooey s’mores creation is complemented by the fact that you are actually getting some potassium in your dessert. I mean, you don’t have to remind your friends and family of this when you make them…just feel good about putting a semi-healthy dessert on the table.
The banana gets warm and a little softer, but not too soft. The chocolate gets melty and the marshmallows get gooey on the inside, but still have that tasty marshmallow crust that reminds you of roasting them over a hot campfire.
Super Simple Supplies:
- Mallows
- Grahams
- Chocolate
- Bananas
- Aluminum foil
- Grill
You can get more creative with add ins, but this was good enough for us!

Ninja tips for making grilled s’mores banana boats:
- Make sure the mallows aren’t touching the aluminum foil. It can get a little messy that way.
- You can check the s’mores, but every time you open the grill, the temp lowers (just like opening an oven).
- Eat them with a spoon! I tried to get a little of everything in each bite.
- Also the chocolate can pool at the bottom of the peel, but it’s super tasty to eat at the end!
Dave Cakes Photography
I would like to give a special shout-out to Mr. Dave Cakes who helped with the grilling AND a lot of the photography. (I’m not quite talented enough to take photos of myself.) I’m LOVING how much he’s gotten into photography over his sabbatical (what I just decided to call his time off). He’s teaching me a lot too!
So tell me…what’s your favorite way to eat s’mores? Have you ever made a s’mores banana boat?
